FOCUS: 50 Years of PNG Through the Lens

Celebrating Papua New Guinea’s journey, spirit and resilience through photography.

FOCUS: 50 Years of PNG Through the Lens brings together more than two lifetimes of remarkable work by renowned photographers Rocky Roe and Dinah Halstead, capturing the beauty, diversity and evolution of Papua New Guinea across five transformative decades.

From the twin volcanic eruptions in Rabaul, East New Britain Province to timeless river scenes and the vibrant expressions of traditional dress, this extraordinary collection tells the story of a nation, its challenges, triumphs and enduring spirit.

Presented in nine thematic collections, FOCUS explores PNG’s life beneath the sea, national events and the industries that have shaped its identity. Each image celebrates the country’s natural and cultural heritage, reminding us to preserve and protect it for generations to come.

Rocky Roe’s body of work takes viewers deep into PNG’s remote landscapes, from the towering peaks of Mt Wilhelm in Simbu Province to the hidden fjords of Tufi in Oro Province, offering rare glimpses of untouched beauty and rural life.

Dinah Halstead, a diving pioneer and passionate conservationist, turns her lens to the underwater wonders of PNG. Her work has gained international recognition, capturing the dazzling biodiversity of the Coral Triangle and inspiring marine conservation efforts through her acclaimed publications, including The Coral Reefs of Papua New Guinea.

The FOCUS: 50 Years of PNG Through the Lens exhibition will debut on Monday, 3rd November at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby, followed by public viewing from Tuesday, 4th November to Thursday 6th. The exhibition will then travel across towns and centres throughout Papua New Guinea, bringing over 200 iconic images closer to local audiences.
