The Story of the Meri Blouse

A Symbol of PNG Identity.

The meri blouse, locally also called kolos in Tok Pisin, is one of the most recognisable garments associated with women in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Featuring a loose, comfortable fit often crafted from colourful fabric with bold motifs, it serves not just as clothing but as a cultural expression of femininity, identity and pride. Today, it is widely worn to church, cultural celebrations, community gatherings, national events or as everyday wear and can be seen sold across both urban centres and rural markets in PNG.

According to reports, the garment has its roots in the missionary era in PNG, when Christian missionaries introduced sewn blouses to local communities as a way to cover bare-breasted women. This was part of early efforts to encourage modesty and introduce Western clothing standards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, women across different regions made the garment their own, stitching, printing and designing meri blouses in vibrant patterns and, eventually, in PNG national colours to reflect local identity and creative flair. Today, the meri blouse is a must-have for women in PNG.

Beyond its origins, the meri blouse has become an important economic and cultural resource. Many women sew and sell kolos at markets and craft stalls, providing income for their families and sustaining traditional craft skills in an evolving marketplace. In recent years, there has also been concern about cheap imported versions undermining local makers, highlighting how significant the garment is to PNG’s cultural economy.

In contemporary PNG, the meri blouse continues to evolve from everyday wear to fashion statements at runways and Independence Day events, while remaining deeply rooted in history and community. Its enduring popularity underscores how clothing in PNG can carry meaning far beyond fabric and thread.

As modern fashion trends and global imports continue to influence Papua New Guinea, how can women balance preserving the traditional meri blouse while embracing contemporary styles?
